About JHD

JHD counselling services was founded by Carol Harmston-Dean in 2013.

Qualified in 2007 as an integrative counsellor Carol began her career working as a school and college counsellor and also had her own private practice.

It was during her time in private practice that she realised that for every client that walked through the door she wasn’t always the most appropriate therapist. No counsellor can be all things to everyone. Counsellors have different specialisms but may also not be the right match in terms of gender, age, ethnicity etc

Carol set up JHD with the aim of building up a team of counsellors as an organisation with the aim to ensure each and every client was matched to the most appropriate therapist in the team. This ethic is still as strong today.

Carol was also very passionate that when a client makes the brave step to ask for help they need this instantly and not have to wait. As such JHD has always prided itself on having no waiting lists and this is still true today.

Clients will always get a response to their enquiry within 24 hours and will have their initial intake/assessment session within 7 days of referral and will be with their allocated counsellor or session 1 within 7 days of intake/assessment.

JHD was formed initially in Cambridgeshire and soon became a counselling service for schools and some of the colleges that make up Cambridge university. JHD was a popular service for private practice clients and also work placed employer assistance programmes. (EAPs)

When Carol relocated to the North West in 2016 she set up in her new area and JHD began to grow.

JHD launched UK wide in 2020 and is now one of the biggest private counselling organisation within the UK. JHD continues to work in schools and Cambridge university colleges, in private practice and EAPs but is now a counselling partner for 3 charities Stopbreathethink, Mind over Cancer and Embrace. JHD has also developed as the counselling provider for businesses.

As a former secondary school teacher Carol worked from 2007 to 2013 as a counselling tutor at 3 different colleges. Delivering all the levels of counselling training. introduction to counselling, level 2 counselling skills, level 3 counselling studies and level 4 diploma in counselling. Following on from the launch of JHD in 2013 on the counselling side Carol opened her own training centre in 2014.

The training centre is still based in Cambridge currently at Madingley Hall where all face to face learning takes place at levels 3 and 4. JHD offers the introduction to counselling and level 2 certificate in counselling courses as a remote (zoom) option and as such attracts students from across the UK.

For the last 6 years in a row JHD training centre has been graded as outstanding with commendation.

JHD is now a very popular training provider of workshops and short courses for schools, colleges and charities.

Although a very busy Managing director and working full time to run the business Carol continues to work as a counsellor, Supervisor, safeguard lead and trainer herself and as such keeps in touch with the very job she was trained in all those years ago. Carol is as passionate about the counselling profession today as she was in 2007.

Carol would like to thank you for visiting our website and hopes that JHD might be of use to you whether looking for a counselling or training service for yourself or someone else.
